Thanks to Brian Potstra for the great work on the graphic.

The iPad is likely neither the future of computing or consumption. In my household we have devices that are better suited to consuming gaming, movies, music etc. The only thing that it could potentially replace is the netbook that we have laying around the living room.

iPad is far superior to a netbook.

In what way?
In technical specs? Wrong. Do your homework. A Net book will give you faster processor with Hyper-Threading, more disk space and expandable ram.

In software? Maybe ... But the iPad is closed. You can't install anything you want. A NetBook is open, you can install anything you want. Run Windows, run Linux, install any software you want or write your own. Including better/cheaper software if you find it.

In looks? Well, yes. The iPad is real pretty.

Sorry, it's not 2000 anymore. Specs are no longer selling features. What appeals to people is what you can do with the device, and that largely comes down to software.

Sure, a NetBook might be a bit faster and have a bigger storage capacity, but it doesn't count for anything when all you're doing is email and light word processing. A NetBook's screen is too small for media consumption.

I have a NetBook. I don't care that it runs Windows 7, because what possibly would I want to install on it? If I want to work, I use my PC. If I want to play the latest games, I'll use my x360. Using a NetBook is only viable when you don't have access to a proper laptop or PC. Linux? lol. Writing code on a NetBook? Get real.

I may not be able to "install anything" I want on the iPad, but I have yet to find a scenario where a piece of software that I wanted was not available on the App Store. 150,000 applications, with the majority of them priced between $1-$5, that's about as cheap as it gets.

The iPad is not meant to replace your laptop or PC. It is for consuming media, and there is not a better device out there that is better at it.

The iPad sucks. Period. I won't get into this, I'll just comment some of your text.

"A NetBook's screen is too small for media consumption."

My Netbook is 10.3inch, that's bigger than the iPad.

"I have a NetBook. I don't care that it runs Windows 7, because what possibly would I want to install on it?"

I have installed Office, FireFox, A Google Adsense tool that tracks my earnings, Skype, Gtalk and also connect it to my Mobile (so I can Connect to Internet).

Imagine I have an iPad. The best app on iPad won't match the power of Microsoft Office. And yes, it work fine on my 1GB RAM, 1.6GHZ LG. I also won't be able to use FireFox with my favorite extensions and switch to Chrome when I don't feel the need to use them. I won't be able to use Skype and Gtalk while browsing the web. I won't be able to track my Adsense earnings while my IM, browser, Windows Media are up and running. I won't be able to browse flash enabled website. I'll miss my little Smart Cam. I won't also be able to connect to Internet, since I'm using my Phone to connect with bluetooth.

Windows is flexible, I don't mean OSX isn't, but iPhone OS isn't a desktop OS. There are huge difference in between and in practice I don't like the fancy colors and transitions, I want hardware + Software that do things and increase productivity.

the ipad is wrong because it is limited. when it was just a phone, it was ok. when it tried to take over laptop/netbook functionality, we said try it.

it is obvious that an ipad is not a laptop nor a netbook. it is an oversized, overpowered, iphone. end of argument. the fervor of first-adopters aside, a real tech-consumer knows that first adoption rarely produces the best product. The competition will answer soon, and they will do right, by giving the consumer what they want.

we can all thank apple for pointing the way. and we can all despise apple for stopping short when we all know they could have easily (given their position as innovators)given us more. to this end i believe apple's strife to achieve innovation has created its own niche. they will innovate in any way possible, and if that means reging a campain of totalitarian control over aesthetics and usability, then so be it. all in all, it translates into just another company hunting for their own, unpastured, bottom line. try to sell that any other way, and i will find it very hard to swallow, if not spit it out completely (which is what i'm doing right now).

wurd to "increase productivity"!

that is what technology, and by extension PC's, are for no?

if technology is not open to interpertation, if it is uncapable of allowing the user to invent new methods of productivity, it is not fullfilling its purpose.

i for one am not in the market for the latest and greatest fork with which to stuff my face with media. the ipad is pure blasphemy. it is the hummer h2 of the automotive world, or the double decker chicken sandwich of the fast food world. possibly both rolled into one and then digitized... /puke

If what you can do with the device is what's important then you're still wrong! What can you do on an iPad (other than touchscreen...wooo) that you can't do on a netbook? The iPad does not support multitasking, it's limited to the apple store, it has no card reader, no flash support, no usb (so you can't even attach a keyboard) and no HDMI. Basically, it's a glorified kimble.

"Linux? lol. Writing code on a NetBook? Get real."

Yeah, that's all we linux users do...

That comment alone shows how out of touch you are.

Great graphic,

but I think it's still a lovely device.

I love my iPad. Just for lounging on the couch while watching a movie on my tv.

And I'm not fat. HA
